The Cake That Never Happened
We’re very good at shouting about the wins. The best ingredients, the glossy icing, the mouthwatering flavours. The handmade cakes flying out of the bakery. But behind the scenes at Exploding Bakery, not every great cake idea makes it to cake delivery day. Because when everything is handmade, things occasionally go 'uh oh'.

As everything is handmade here at Exploding Bakery, the human error mishaps do happen from time to time. And sometimes the progress of developing new cakes for our range is frustratingly slow.
We have constant ideas what we could be making, but the stumbling block is always the bigger question: will the recipe work as a bigger production cake?

Take our Blackcurrant Loaf. In the test kitchen? A dream. Vibrant, flavour-packed cake perfection. Photos taken, suppliers told, email signatures updated with photos for the launch anticipation. But scaling that recipe up for full bakery production? Chaos.
Underbaked one minute, burnt the next. Sunken berries. Dull icing. Three months of tweaking, testing, our New Product Development Baker decided they were ready for a new career change in the middle of it. The months trying to fix the recipe resulted in us quietly losing our minds. We had to admit defeat. Some new cake recipes just don’t want to happen in our production bakery.
It taught us a big lesson. Staying creative means knowing when to let go. We’ll always experiment, push flavours and dream up new ideas, but we’ll never sell you a cake we don’t absolutely love. Even if that means binning a passion project and moving on to the next delicious thing. Because you deserve the best cake. And we need to allow time for new, exciting recipes.
