Coaltown Coffee: From Black Gold to Bold Brews

Tucked away in Ammanford, South West Wales, Coaltown Coffee is brewing up a legacy that nods to the town’s past while fuelling its future. Back in the day, Ammanford ran on Anthracite coal, known as ‘Black Gold’, until the last colliery shut in 2003, leaving a town full of history but short on industry.

This is when Coaltown Coffee entered the scene back in 2018. It all started from a mission to bring fresh energy to Ammanford, swapping coal dust for coffee beans and built a new kind of ‘Black Gold', keeping people powered up rather than powering machines. After years of roasting and grafting, they put Ammanford back on the map as a place of production, this time with speciality coffee at its heart.

Here’s a photo of Ben Addis, founder Scott James’s great-grandfather, which hangs on their roastery wall. He spent his whole working life in the local collieries, starting at just 14. It’s a nod to the town’s grit, resilience, and work ethic, all values that now fuel Coaltown’s coffee.

From Roastery to Community

Coaltown’s journey started with a single roaster and a love for bold, rich coffee inspired by the coal miners before them. Their signature Black Gold blend is a tribute to Ammanford’s industrial roots. Deep, intense, and packed with character. But it didn’t stop there.

Their Ammanford Espresso Bar quickly became the local caffeine hub, where coffee lovers could geek out over the roasting process while sipping the good stuff. And when demand grew, so did they. Coaltown opened their second espresso bar in Pontarddulais in 2023, keeping the coffee flowing and the community buzzing.

But it’s not just about great coffee. As a B Corp and Real Living Wage employer, Coaltown is built on a commitment to ethical sourcing, sustainability, and fair pay. They put people and the planet before profit, ensuring that every bean brewed makes a positive impact. This is where we really align.

Coaltown x Exploding Bakery: The Ultimate Coffee & Cake Power Couple

Coaltown and us joined forces last year to make an every day coffee break a bit more special. Their espresso bars now serve Exploding Bakery cakes, and let’s just say the combo has been a total winner. Their customers can’t get enough, and we love working with a company that shares our obsession with quality, sustainability, and proper flavour.

Plus, as we are part of 1% for the Planet,  Coaltown are thrilled that our partnership also contributes to important environmental causes. Every slice of cake and every sip of coffee does some good, whether it’s protecting UK rivers and coastlines with Surfers Against Sewage, or supporting endangered species in Colombia through Casa Luker.

If you are not near one of the Coaltown cafes, don't fret. You can also get your cake and coffee fix via our online shop as we're doing a limited time coffee & cake collaboration with Coaltown. You can find our Cake & Coffee Gift Box here.

Long story short? Cake and coffee should always taste this good, and when you get the right people behind them, they actually do some good too.
