Why We Support The Independent
Back in 2011, Exploding Bakery started life in a tiny Exeter coffee shop with a very serious mission: serve really good cake and exceptional coffee. That’s it. No distractions. At the time, specialty coffee was still a bit niche, so bringing Monmouth coffee to town felt mildly rebellious. A small but mighty stand against bad cake, burnt coffee and big chain cafés.
Over the next 14 years, the café grew, as did we. There were laughs, late nights, parties, hard graft and a crash course in just how tough running an independent café really is. Rising costs, rent, ingredients, staffing… turns out cafés aren’t powered purely by passion and caffeine. It’s a real juggle for independents everywhere.
Eventually, we had to pick a lane. Trying to run a busy café and a growing production bakery was a bit like juggling cakes while riding a unicycle. Something had to give. So we lovingly passed our café on to the brilliant folks at Portal Pizza. Kind people, excellent food, talented hands

We truly exist for independent coffee shops. Supporting independent businesses is baked into everything we do. We want to see our high streets thrive. No more chain restaurants. No more bad cake or coffee in that matter.
These days, our focus is crystal clear: making exceptional handmade wholesale cakes for cafés and restaurants who care about quality. Sourcing ingredients as locally as possible. Adding no fake flavours, no weird colours. Giving you real cake you can actually taste. We want your counter to sell out, your margins to make sense, and your customers to walk away smiling and come back with the same excitement.
